Distinguished Performance Award winners announced

Recipients of the Lab's 1997 Distinguished Performance Award have been announced. The latest group to receive this annual award, which recognizes individuals and small and large teams for job performance above and beyond what is normally expected, includes 12 individuals, seven small teams and eight large teams.

Individuals or small teams who receive Distinguished Performance awards must have made an outstanding and unique contribution that had a very positive impact on the Lab's programmatic efforts or status in the scientific community, required unusual creativity or dedication of the individual or team and resulted from a level of performance substantially beyond what normally would be expected.

Large teams must have performed scientific, engineering, technical, administrative and/or management activities at a level far above normal job assignments; completed a project that brought distinction to the Laboratory by resolving a problem that has broad impact and/or resulted in the Lab becoming the recognized expert in the field; worked on a project that involved original and innovative thinking, approaches and results; and exhibited (by each member of the team) an exemplary level of skill, teamwork and dedication well beyond normal exceptions that resulted in the successful completion of the project.

Pledge cards for employee scholarship fund due in today

Today by close of business is the deadline to return pledge cards for the Laboratory's new employee scholarship fund. The "Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund" is open to University of California Laboratory employees and subcontract personnel. The program allows employees and subcontract personnel to voluntarily contribute to a fund that will provide undergraduate scholarships to Northern New Mexico students.

Employees may donate between $1 and $10 or more each paycheck, and the contributions to the scholarship fund will be tax deductible. The scholarship fund will be managed by the not-for-profit Laboratory Foundation.

UC Lab, DOE employees and subcontract personnel who want to contribute to the giving programs should complete the pledge form and return it to Mail Stop A117.

Employees and other personnel also may contribute to the matching gifts educational program. Through this program, a pledge can be designated to a specific school or school district. The foundation will match the pledge. Employees also may make a donation to the foundation's general fund for unrestricted purposes.

All donations by check should be made payable to the Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation.

For more information, contact Chris Olivera at 5-3908 or write scholarships@lanl.gov.

Initiative created to better serve the student population at the Laboratory

Hundreds of high school and college students come to the Laboratory every year to work in a variety of science education or other special employment programs. Some students eventually may return to the Lab as a staff member.

In order to better track the career paths of students at the Lab, the Human Resources (HR) Division has created the Student Pipeline Initiative. Through the initiative, selected high school and college students -- about two dozen students each year -- who apply to the program and are selected will be informed about progressively more challenging educational and employment opportunities in science, engineering, mathematics, technology and other fields that are central to the Lab's mission of reducing the nuclear danger.

The Student Pipeline Initiative will link students participating in Lab programs with other resources at the Lab and with several companies outside the Lab. Once students are in the pipeline they will be notified about science education or special employment programs and possible employment opportunities at the Lab and elsewhere in New Mexico. And students will be paired with Lab employees who will mentor the students, said Ann Kuiper of Staffing (HR-5), who is coordinating the initiative.

HR-5 will work with other Lab organizations and outside employers to move students from one Lab-sponsored employment program to another, then, if available, to fulltime employment at the Lab or with an outside employer, explained Kuiper.

The initiative also helps the Lab retain outstanding local students interested in pursuing careers in math, science, engineering or technology who might otherwise leave New Mexico for employment, she said.

"We believe this initiative is key to the Laboratory's ability to serve its student population well," said Kuiper. "Linking existing programs, via the Pipeline, augments the impact on students of any one student program and helps these programs function as a collective effort.

"By identifying and cultivating talented and motivated young people, we enhance the Laboratory's employee applicant pool with students who may eventually help to strengthen and further diversify our workforce," Kuiper added.

A World Wide Web page has been established for more information on the Student Pipeline Initiative. Students and Laboratory employees interested in learning more about or applying to participate through the Pipeline can find the student application form, recommendation form, selection criteria and deadline information by going to http://www.hr.lanl.gov/pipeline/ online.

The Lab is working with outside companies and organizations to identify programs or job opportunities that may be available around the state for students in science career-related fields, said Kuiper.

To be eligible to enter the Student Pipeline Initiative, students must have participated in a science education or special employment student program at the Lab. The students' Laboratory mentor or anyone who has supervised an outstanding student can recommend that student for inclusion in the program. Or students can apply, provided a Lab mentor or supervisor is willing to recommend them.

A committee of Lab technical staff, HR personnel and representatives from companies participating in the initiative will select students to participate based on predetermined criteria.

For more information, call Kuiper at 5-3075, write to akuiper@lanl.gov by electronic mail or see a master management memo.

August 'Reflections' is in

The August issue of "Reflections" magazine being delivered to employees at their mail stops includes features on the Laboratory's characterization process for waste headed to WIPP, an effort to help Española get a grip on property, answers to frequently asked questions on the Laboratory's Site-Wide Environmental Impact Statement and more.

LANSCE tours will give students a chance to learn first hand

Beginning this fall, fourth- through eighth-grade students from Los Alamos and nearby communities can learn firsthand about scientific research and experiments conducted at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center.

The center at Technical Area 53, in conjunction with Science Education (STB/SE) has developed the LANSCE Educational Tours project. The tours will pair students and their teachers with LANSCE staff members to highlight the many research uses and practical applications of the linear accelerator at LANSCE.

Other scientific topics students will be introduced to include subatomic particles, radioisotopes, materials science, particle dynamics, nuclear stockpile, experiment design, inventing tools for science, circuits, fields, radio frequency generation and electrical engineering, said LANSCE Director Roger Pynn.

Science Education is developing the educational component of the new program "so that the kids find it very accessible and interesting to them," said Dolores Jacobs of STB/SE.

Teachers from Pojoaque, Española, Belen and Jemez Valley are working this summer with STB/SE and LANSCE staff to develop the program in time for the 1998-99 school year, said Jacobs.

The LANSCE Educational Tour project involves the creation of a written tour guide, written student activities both pre- and post- visit, a video of the LANSCE beam line and a World Wide Web site for students to maintain connections to each other and the Lab, said Pynn. The teachers are working with LANSCE scientists to incorporate the advanced work being done at LANSCE into their regular science curriculum.

"There is so much interesting science going on [at LANSCE] . . . kids just think it's awesome," said Jacobs, adding that STB/SE will notify local schools when tours can begin.
