First Charlene Douglass Memorial Award to CIAC's Sandy Sparks Sandra L. Sparks, manager of the Department of Energy's Computer Incident Advisory Center (CIAC), has been awarded the first Charlene Douglass Memorial Award for Sustained Outstanding Contributions in a Leadership Role. The award was presented at the 23rd annual DOE Computer Security Group (CSG) Training Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. The award was named after former Laboratory employee Charlene Douglass. Douglass, who joined the Lab in 1967, passed away on Jan. 1, 2000, from cancer. Douglass worked in the former Computing (C) Division for 12 years and later joined the former Operational Security/Safeguards (OS) Division, which was a predecessor of the Safeguards and Security (S) Division. She served as the Lab's computer security site manager and the computer protection program manager. For several years during this period, she also was a member of the steering committee, which sponsors the Security Conference and served as program chair of that group's training conference for two years. "Awarding the first Charlene Douglass Memorial Award to Sandy Sparks is important for several reasons. First, it recognizes Sandy's outstanding leadership over a span of turbulent years and acknowledges that her leadership legacy will continue for years," said Jill Seeger, Computing, Communications and Networking (CCN) Division security officer, and vice-chair of the conference steering committee. "And, it sets the standard for future nominees for this award. Charlene and Sandy worked together numerous times over the years and respected each other's work tremendously. I'm sure that Charlene is honored that Sandy is the very first recipient of this award." CIAC has been in existence since 1989 and is recognized nationally and internationally for its technical and leadership contributions. Sandy has been the leader of the center for more than six years and currently heads a staff of 30 computer scientists, technicians, and clerical employees. In part, Sandy's nomination for the award reads as follows: "Through Sandy's tireless efforts over the years, CIAC has expanded its role from incident handling to include security training, security vulnerability assessments and threat analysis. Her enthusiasm and commitment has allowed CIAC to attract and retain a motivated staff with outstanding technical skills and a strong customer service orientation. Through her efforts, CIAC is one of the founding members of FIRST (Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams), a global organization established to foster cooperation and coordination among computer security teams worldwide." Family Day organizers looking for music acts The Family Day planning committee is looking for employees who are interested in providing music for the Laboratory's Family Day on Sept. 15. "Family Day provides a unique opportunity for our employees to showcase their musical talent," said Linda Anderman of the Community Relations (CRO) Office. The performances will take place near the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3 throughout the day, said Anderman. The music can be instrumental or vocal and not all the members of a music group need to be Lab employees, said Anderman. Anderman added that because this is a volunteer activity, musicians won't receive any compensation for peforming. Lab workers interested in performing at Family Day can contact Andrew Chavez of CRO at 5-4803, or write to ajchavez@lanl.gov by electronic mail.
