Super Bolide workshop at Lab
Edward Tagliaferri, left, from The Aerospace Corp., Doug Revelle, center, of Atmospheric and Climate Science (EES-8) and Richard Spalding from Sandia National Laboratories share a moment at a Super Bolide workshop held recently at the Laboratory. The workshop brought together leading meteor researchers looking into the impact of large meteors and small asteroids into the Earth's atmosphere. Memorial service this afternoon for Allan
Johnston
A memorial service for Allan Johnston, the Laboratory's Business Operations Division (BUS) director, is scheduled for 3 p.m. today in the Duane Smith Auditorium at Los Alamos High School. Father Colin Kelly will preside over the service. A reception follows the service in Fuller Lodge on Central Avenue.
Johnston, 58, died June 15 after a brief illness.
Johnston came to the Laboratory in 1993. He had been controller and director of finance of Batelle Memorial Institute at Pacific Northwest Laboratories prior to joining Los Alamos. A U.S. Army veteran, Johnston also was previously employed by Arthur Andersen & Co. and Union Carbide Corp.
He is survived by his wife, Suzanne, of Weapons Engineering (ESA-WE), and children David, Christy and Jeff and other family.
The nonprofit Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation has established a scholarship in Johnston's name. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Laboratory Foundation in Johnston's name. The foundation address is 1850 Old Pecos Trail, Suite F, Santa Fe, N.M. 87505. Or donations can be made to Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Service, 116 Central Park Square, Los Alamos, N.M. 87544.

Employees can still provide input on service awards program
Compensation and Benefits (HR-1) is still accepting input on its service awards program for University of California Laboratory employees. Currently, UC Lab employees are eligible for Nambeware awards upon completion of 10 years of service and every five years following.
An input session was held last week in the Otowi Building cafeteria siderooms sponsored by HR-1. However, UC Lab employees who couldn't attend the input session can write to serviceawards@lanl.gov by electronic mail for a survey on the awards program. HR-1 is accepting comments on the program through 5 p.m. Friday.
Next Monday, July 2, HR-1 will hold a drawing for a piece of Nambeware from all of the people who respond to the survey.
For more information, contact Christine Hipp of HR-1 at 7-8282. Or see the June 18 Daily Newsbulletin.
Some Lab employees will see changes to federal income tax beginning next month
University of California Laboratory employees who are in the 28 percent and above tax bracket will see changes to their federal income tax withholdings beginning next month.
Congress earlier this month passed and President Bush signed into law the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001. The new law changes the amount of federal income tax withheld beginning July 1. UC Lab employees should see changes, if any, on their July 12 pay check, said Lori Hicks, the Payroll Office team leader in Accounting (BUS-1).
Subcontract personnel should check with their payroll offices if necessary.
The reductions in federal tax withholding tables apply to the 28 percent and higher tax brackets. The 0 percent and 15 percent tax brackets aren't affected at this time by the new law. And, state income tax withholding tables aren't affected.
The 28 percent bracket will reduce to 27 percent; 31 percent to 30 percent; 36 percent to 35 percent; and 39.6 percent to 38.6 percent, respectively.
The revised 2001 tax table is available from the Payroll Office Web site at http://bus.lanl.gov/bus1/payroll/default.htm#Tax online.
The Laboratory can't advise employees on their personal tax situation. Employees should consult with their tax professional.

Fire restrictions
The Laboratory is again faced with the potential for an extreme wild fire season. Currently the fuel moisture contents in both fine and 10 hour fuels is below those recorded immediately prior to the Cerro Grande Fire. The Laboratory, along with other federal, state and local officials urge all employees to be very cautious when conducting any activities that could result in igniting a wildland fire.
