Laboratory Director John Browne recently sat down with AsianWeek, the only English-language news weekly in the United States aimed at the Asian Pacific Islander community, to discuss some issues of concern to the API community and to reiterate the Laboratory's commitment to a diverse workplace. That interview, a question-and-answer piece, is in the "Talk Back" section of the April 20 issue of AsianWeek. To access the interview online, click here |

Six Northern New Mexico seniors received college scholarships from Compaq Corp. during a ceremony last Friday in the Los Alamos Inn. The scholarships were awarded during the kickoff luncheon for the 2001 Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund campaign.
Maria Alvarado of McCurdy School in Española; Amanda Chavez of Taos High School; Bettina Jaramillo of Mora High School; Sara Montoya of Pojoaque High School; Vanessa Bustos of West Las Vegas High; and Samuel Phillips of Los Alamos High School received the one-year, $2,000 scholarships.
Compaq Corp. is supplying the new supercomputers that will be housed in the Strategic Computing Complex under construction at Technical Area 3. Compaq also has agreed to contribute $60,000 over five years to the Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund drive, which began last Friday.
The scholarships were presented to the students by Al Sattelberger, Chemistry (C) Division director and president of the not-for-profit Laboratory Foundation Board of Directors and Steve Shaw, a deputy program manager from Compaq Corp.
The campaign, which runs through May 25, allows Laboratory employees and subcontract personnel to donate to the scholarship fund either through payroll deduction or through personal check, said Chris Olivera of the Community Relations (CRO) Office and coordinator of giving campaigns at the Lab.
University of California Lab employees began receiving pledge cards at their mail stop last week. In addition, an information table has been set up in the Otowi Building cafeteria lobby from noon to 1 p.m. through the campaign's closing date. Lab workers can learn more about the scholarship fund and turn in completed pledge forms at the table.
Subcontract personnel also can participate in the campaign. Subcontractors should contact their employer or Olivera if they are interested in participating.

Ergonomics is "a way of life" "Ergonomics should be viewed as a way of life, not a way of work," Lab Ergonomics Program Manager Graciela Perez of Industrial Hygiene and Safety (ESH-5) told workers who attended Tuesday's "Ergo Improv," hosted by the Integrated Safety Management Grassroots Volunteers at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) at Technical Area 53. Perez is available to meet with workers in what she calls an ergonomic "outreach" service to Lab organizations. To schedule a meeting, write to gperez@lanl.gov by electronic mail. In addition, the second traveling Ergonomics Expo is from 9 a.m. to noon today in the Pecos Conference Room of the Industrial Business Development (IBD) office on Trinity Drive.
