Director answers questions sent to future@lanl.gov

Laboratory Director John Browne has completed another set of answers to questions submitted anonymously by Lab employees through future@lanl.gov (see the Director's home page under "Ask the Director.") This question-and-answer series started with the July 14, 1998, town-hall meeting and continued through the mini town-hall meetings held with OS/GS and TEC staff. The director is always open to employee questions and will continue to answer those sent to him at future@lanl.gov.

Lab women expand career horizons for New Mexico girls

Cholene Espinoza, an airplane pilot from the Española Valley who flew combat missions over Iraq and Bosnia, is the featured speaker for the 21st annual Expanding Your Horizons conference to be held March 24 at the Lab. The daylong conference is sponsored by the Lab, Los Alamos Women in Science and the New Mexico Network for Women in Science and Engineering.

At the conference, young women in grades 8 through 10 from schools throughout Northern New Mexico will attend hands-on workshops designed to encourage their interest in mathematics and science. Women who have successfully pursued careers in technical fields are the workshop leaders. Each participant will attend two workshops, one from the participant's declared interest area and the other chosen to introduce the student to a new area. No more than 10 participants are assigned to a workshop, so that each can participate actively. The young women also will participate in a team activity.

Espinoza flies large jets for United Airlines and runs an international aircraft consulting business. She flew a U-2 aircraft in 1991 for the U.S. Air Force and received the Aerial Achievement Medal and the Air Medal for Combat for missions flown over Iraq and Bosnia. In addition to her address to the conference participants, Espinoza will speak to the general public later that evening at the Bradbury Science Museum.

Since EYH began 21 years ago, thousands of high school and middle school students have been introduced to career possibilities in mathematics and science. The young women are targeted at the time in their lives when they begin to plan for college and careers and are encouraged to keep their options open by taking math and science classes during high school.

This year, the Lab will offer a special workshop for teachers who accompany students to the conference. Sponsored by the Science Education Program Office (STB-EPO), the workshop will be based on Myra and David Sadker's study on sexism in the schools,"Failing at Fairness: How our Schools Cheat Girls."

Each school has been asked to select five young women for EYH. Schools provide transportation and sponsors. The Lab provides lunch for students and sponsors and will provide the cost of a substitute for teachers enrolled in the teacher workshop. Individual registrations are accepted subject to space availability. The conference is limited to 150 young women.

Information and registration materials are available from J. Tinka Gammel at 7-9149, jtg@lanl.gov, or through the conference website at http://www.t12.lanl.gov/~lawis/NEYH.html. Information also is available through Carol Ladelfe (cladelfe@lanl.gov, 5-3285) and Alexine Salazar (alexine@lanl.gov, 5-5283).

Park-and-ride users to be surveyed today about the service

Laboratory employees who ride the Northern New Mexico Park and Ride Express are being surveyed today about the commuter-bus service.

Riders will be given the paper survey that contains about 20 questions when they board a bus this morning, said Dan Stover of the state Highway and Transportation Department. The survey can be completed in pen or pencil and returned to attendants in the pickup/drop-off locations in Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Española and Pojoaque on the return trip home, he said.

"It's just to provide us with some information," said Stover, noting that the state wants to ascertain the level of satisfaction and confidence riders have in the system. The survey also will help the state identify new pickup/drop-off lots, justify new and continued funding and help better identify communities where riders live, he said.

The Northern New Mexico Park and Ride Express began the five-day-a-week commuter service last November. In the first two months of operations, more than 20,000 people rode a bus between the four communities, according to statistics from the state.

The state agency also reported that through Jan. 28, some 6.1 million vehicle miles weren't traveled because people took a park-and-ride bus and that more than 17,000 vehicles were counted in park-and-ride lots in Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Española and Pojoaque. Average weekly ridership through the end of January has been about 4,500, Stover added.

Bus Ride New Mexico of Santa Fe is operating the system for the state road agency. The company is using 47-passenger diesel buses.

Passes for the bus service are $17.50 for a 10-ride pass, $30 for a 20-ride pass and $50 for a 40-ride pass. Passes can be purchased at the Furr's Supermarkets on Cordova Road and Pacheco Street in Santa Fe, and in Los Alamos and Española. Checks can be made to the New Mexico Highway and Transportation Department, he said.

Per trip fares are $2, $1 for citizens age 62 and above and students 18 and under. Stover said the state is encouraging users to purchase a pass. However, if riders want to pay on a per-ride basis, they should pay supervisors at the pickup/drop-off lots in Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Pojoaque and Española, not the bus drivers.

He added that state and city of Santa Fe officials continue work on locating a southside Santa Fe pickup/drop-off location. There are currently four other pickup/drop-off locations in Santa Fe.

Draft collective-bargaining policy question-and-answer session slated for Thursday

A question-and-answer meeting has been scheduled so employees can ask questions about the new draft collective-bargaining policy (HEERA-like policy). The meeting will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the TA-55 Auditorium. Q- or L- clearance is required for access to the main complex, and additional site-specific authorization is required to enter TA-55. Employees without this authorization who wish to attend the meeting must arrange for their own access using a qualified TA-55 escort.

The draft HEERA-like policy is on RevCom for employee review and comment. Employees can access the policy at http://peak.lanl.gov/rcg2/LANL.html.

The deadline for comments on the draft collective-bargaining policy has been extended to March 12.

Accessing declassified information

If you are interested in recently declassified information about early nuclear weapons testing or viewing actual film footage of the testing, you can access this information through the Department of Energy's OpenNet website.

OpenNet is an internet-based database containing recently declassified documents, including information about early nuclear weapon's testing, human radiation experiments and many other areas such as health, environmental and safety issues. There are approximately 368,000 entries containing the document title, author(s) and locator information, and many of the referenced documents are available for viewing as full text images of the original document. In addition to OpenNet, DOE's home page contains a Declassified Materials section that includes links to OpenNet and other sites, such as the President's Advisory Committee on Human Radiation Experiments.
