Glenn Seaborg dead at 86

Nobel laureate Glenn Seaborg, 86, died Thursday at his home in California from complications of a stroke he suffered last October. Seaborg was the discoverer of countless atomic isotopes and 10 elements, including plutonium and seaborgium. He also was a section head in the Manhattan Project, chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley, chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission under presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon, and associate director-at-large of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. More information about Seaborg and his accomplishments is available at http://teamweb.lbl.gov/seaborg/start.cfm.

Smile, you're on candid camera

Identifying changes in a secure area, room or building can be critical to knowing if the materials there have been tampered with or changed in any way. A real-time video system -- NTvision -- developed by Leonard Burczyk of Space Data Systems (NIS-3) combines computers, cameras and an intranet browser to put an unblinking eye on special areas. The system takes periodic snapshots of the area under observation, but starts continual filming the moment movement is detected in a specific range, and it documents and highlights any changes to the scene. Designed for facilities with closely guarded materials under constant monitoring, NTvision marks changes as small as a pen's position being shifted on a desk, lights turning off or on at an unexpected time, or a package being removed from or deposited within a room. NTvision is based on readily available, low-cost desktop computer systems, is portable, and can be networked to allow remote, real-time monitoring of specific areas or facilities. It also allows frame-by-frame review of incidents the system has flagged as unusual and has therefore recorded, with the offending areas or objects highlighted for immediate observation. The Laboratory developed the system specifically for monitoring nuclear materials.
