Senior managers accelerate schedule for
required management training
More than 250 managers are taking courses as part of the Laboratory's
Required Management Training plan.
According to John Zondlo of Training and Development (HR-6),
the Laboratory implemented Required Management Training as part
of its response to the University of California's analysis of
the hard drive incident in 2000. The Senior Executive Team decided
to accelerate the completion of the Required
Management Training modules by group-level managers. Under
the accelerated schedule, all training must be completed by June
30.
Managers must complete the following five required courses:
Orientation to Management (# 17556), Essentials of Supervision
(# 13605), Management Responsibilities for Safety and Security
(#21875), Fiduciary Responsibilities of Managers (21876) and
Managing and Supervising People (#21877).
A sixth course, Project Management Overview (# 7257), also
is required for those managers who manage major construction
projects that cost more than $500,000. Training and Development
offers these courses on a monthly basis at the Canyon School
Complex. The modules are offered twice each month.
Zondlo said newly appointed managers will receive notice they
have been assigned to Training Plan # 4843. They will be directed
to enroll in the next series of Required Management Training
modules, typically in the month following their assignment to
the plan. The modules are offered back-to-back over a four-day
period.
All group-level managers have been assigned to the Required
Management Training plan and should have received an electronic
mail message confirming this requirement. Group-level managers
who haven't received this confirmation should write to leadership@lanl.gov
by electronic mail.
All managers are required to complete the "immersion"
option - all five modules over four days, course #21878 - unless
they have already completed some modules, in which case they
should complete the remaining modules as soon as they can get
registered for an upcoming session, said Zondlo.
Managers can register for courses at the Virtual Training
Center at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOCourses.asp?WebSubCat=LDRRMT
online.
A list of frequently asked questions regarding Required Management
Training can be found at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/TD/ManagerDev/rmt/RMT.stm
online. Managers with additional questions should write to leadership@lanl.gov by
electronic mail.

New Web page consolidates training, learning
information for Lab workers
Training and Development (HR-6) in conjunction with Communication
and Arts Services (IM-1) created a new Web page called Training/Learning
that provides concise information about all training and education
opportunities at the Laboratory.
"One of the basic design issues we wanted to address
was accessibility," said Brenda Warner, HR-6 Web page /
site developer. "Employees can now access all training information
directly from the Lab's homepage by clicking on 'Training' under
Work/Life. This link leads to the 'Training/Learning' Web site,
a one-stop compilation of educational opportunities at the Lab,"
she said.
The new Training/Learning Web site contains the latest information
about current educational offerings at the Laboratory. The side
includes links to the Virtual Training Center, higher education
opportunities, workshops, NTU short courses, and continuing education
offerings, such as Learning@LANL, the Leadership Center and a
new site for managers called Manager Education. The Manager Education
site is where managers will find information about required training
and links to useful internal and external Web sites.
The Training/Learning site also contains contact information
for other education and training groups at the Lab, including
education outreach, health and safety and security and computer
training. Employees also can access their training transcripts
and plans through the new Web site.
The Training/Learning Web page can be found at http://int.lanl.gov/training/
online.
