Director named for ESA Division

Earle Marie Hanson is the new director of the Engineering Sciences and Applications (ESA) Division at the Laboratory.

Hanson's appointment was announced by Associate Laboratory Director for Nuclear Weapons Steve Younger. "Earle Marie brings excellent knowledge and experience to the position of Division Director," said Younger. "She has a strong background in the Los Alamos weapons program and in providing leadership for a number of organizations across the Laboratory.

"During her career at Los Alamos, she was involved in, and led, research and development of weapons components and materials, and served as deputy program director for nuclear materials and stockpile management and most recently as acting deputy director for ESA Division."

"I am excited and thrilled to have been selected to lead ESA Division into the 21st century," said Hanson. "I want to thank John Browne and Steve Younger for the trust and confidence they have placed in me in selecting me to lead ESA Division.

"ESA is a strong division with a compelling mission, a healthy budget, and a dedicated and talented staff. I am confident that we will be successful in meeting our stewardship responsibilities for nuclear weapons and enabling engineering technologies," Hanson said.

"In addition to ESA's programmatic challenges, we must continue to place top priority on working safely and securely and protecting the environment. We also need to proactively address critical infrastructure needs by upgrading some of our 40-year-old buildings and assure that we develop and maintain the essential capabilities, key staffing and appropriate project-management tools needed to accomplish our mission."

Hanson has worked at the Laboratory for 22 years; she has been acting deputy director of ESA since last September. She also has served as deputy director of the Nuclear Materials and Stockpile Management (NMSM) Program Office.

Hanson has held a number of other management positions dating back to 1984, including group leader in the former Weapons Subsystems (WX-5) Group.

Hanson earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry magna cum laude from Cornell University in 1964 and a doctorate degree in inorganic chemistry from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1969.

ESA Division is a multidisciplinary engineering division whose mission is to provide stewardship of nuclear weapons and enabling engineering technologies. The division works to ensure the safety and reliability of the nuclear weapons stockpile and preserve and nurture engineering technologies that enhance the Lab's ability to accomplish its mission.

The division has 744 University of California employees and subcontract personnel.

Volunteers needed this week to judge science fairs

The Community Relations (CRO-1) Office needs employees interested in volunteering as judges later this week.

Employees who have degrees in science, mathematics or engineering, or have equivalent work experience, or are enrolled in a post-secondary institution majoring in science, math or an engineering discipline can serve as science fair judges, said Barbara Grimes of CRO-1 and the Lab's American Indian Educational Outreach coordinator.

Santa Clara Day School at Santa Clara Pueblo and Oke Owingeh Community School at San Juan Pueblo are conducting science fairs on Thursday. The fairs begin at 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. respectively at the pueblo schools.

Santa Clara Pueblo is located off NM 30 just south of Española. San Juan Pueblo is located north of Española off NM 68.

On Friday, Tesuque Pueblo Day School is hosting a science fair from 9 a.m. to noon. Science fair judges should report to the principal's office, said Grimes. Tesuque Pueblo is six miles south of Pojoaque off U.S. 84-285.

And next Tuesday, Feb. 16, the Northern Pueblos Agency Invention Convention takes place from 9 a.m. to noon in the Santa Clara Pueblo Community Gymnasium. A briefing for judges begins at 9 a.m., Grimes added.

Lab employees interested in volunteering should contact Theresa Sandoval of CRO-1 at 5-4400 or write to theresas@lanl.gov by e-mail. Employees should provide their name, group, telephone and fax numbers, an electronic mail address and activity preference.

University of California Laboratory employee science fair judges can use community service leave for these science education activities, said Grimes. Leave form number 702 should be completed and returned to Dennis Gill in the Education Program Office (STB-EPO) at Mail Stop F671, she added.

For more information, call Grimes at 5-5121 or write to bgrimes@lanl.gov by e-mail.
