UC's relationship with industry
Our Laboratory's relationship with industry continues to evolve as the world moves to a global marketplace and as our missions change. Universities are also reexamining their relationship with industry. I want to share some things I learned last week at the University of California, Los Angeles, at the UC President's Retreat on "The University of California's Relationships with Industry." go to
Allergy shot confusion due to programming error
Employees who received allergy shots administered by a nurse this month will be refunded any $15 copayment fees they paid, according to the Laboratory's benefits office.
Refunds won't be given if employees visited their doctor and in the process received an allergy shot, said Mary Jo Fischer of the benefits office, part of the Human Resources (HR) Division.
She said Allergy and Asthma Associates of Northern New Mexico will refund the $15 copayment for any allergy injections received in January 1997.
A programming error by Prudential Insurance Co. caused the problem, Fischer said.
For more information, contact the benefits office at 7-1806 or write to benefits@lanl.gov by electronic mail.

Diversity Office seeks nominations for Diversity Council
Laboratory employees are needed to fill five vacancies on the Lab's year-old Diversity Council.
The Diversity Council acts as an advisory body to the Lab's diversity director and meets bi-monthly, said Mick Trujillo, acting director of the Diversity Office.
The new Diversity Council members will replace those employees who served one-year terms, he said.
Mary Trainor of the Quality and Planning (QP) Programs Office is the new chairperson of the Diversity Council.
Employees selected to fill the five vacancies will serve two-year terms in order to stagger members' terms, said Trujillo.
A master management memo on nominations to the Diversity Council from Trujillo is scheduled to be issued today.
Employees interested in serving on the Diversity Council or nominating other employees can obtain a nomination form from the Diversity Office, or by going to the master management memo. Nominations should be completed and returned to Debbi Wersonick in the Diversity Office by Feb. 21. Her mail stop is C329.
Serving a second year on the Diversity Council are Larry Avens of Advanced Technology (NMT-6), Eugene Farnum of Ceramic Science and Technology (MST-4), Barbara Grimes and Albert Jiron of the Community Involvement and Outreach (CIO) Office, Thomas Kwan of Plasma Physics Applications (XPA), Robert Romero of the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Facility (CST-26), Reuben Roybal of Media (CIC-17), Trainor and John Viechec of the Facility Management Program Office (FSS-IFMPO).
Creation of a Diversity Council was one of the goals Laboratory Director Sig Hecker established when he created the Diversity Office. The Diversity Council also was a recommendation of the Lab's strategic plan for diversity, "Diversity Initiatives at Los Alamos National Laboratory."

Paxton/Pruvost honored for publication
PHOTO: Tom McLaughlin, center, of Nuclear Criticality Safety (ESH-6) talks about the Lab's Nuclear Safety Guide with Hugh Paxton, left, and Norm Pruvost, during a recognition breakfast in the Otowi Building. The group hosted the breakfast to recognize Paxton's lifetime achievements, to honor Paxton and Pruvost on the publication of the Nuclear Criticality Safety Guide, which was released last September, and to mark the reprinting of the Nuclear Safety Guide, a four-document collection dating back to 1956.
