Mission

The Institute's mission is to:

  • foster a vigorous intellectual environment at LANL
  • define and develop strategic thrusts
  • target and pursue funding opportunities
  • create strategic external collaborations and alliances
  • widen local, regional, national and international recognition of the excellent research conducted under the auspices of the Los Alamos Quantum Institute

History

In June 2001 a small working group of quantum information, science, and technology (QIST) researchers from C, CCS, MST, NIS, P and T divisions was chartered to develop a plan to create a cohesive lab-wide QIST program and possibly an institute to support this exciting field. The working group formed the Quantum Institute and a visitor program; garnered funding to refurbish labs, offices, and a briefing center; and identified a steering committee and executive board to guide the institute. In December 2002, the Laboratory Director, John Browne, officially dedicated the Quantum Institute; subsequently the steering committee announced an interim science director and an executive director.

The area of quantum information, science, and technology is rapidly evolving with important applications in the areas of quantum cryptography, quantum computing, quantum metrology, and advanced quantum-based sensors, some of which are directly relevant to the Laboratory's national security mission.

Accomplishments

  • Held Quantum Institute (QI) opening – December 2002
  • Completed QI infrastructure refurbishments
  • Conducted technical QI workshop that spawned new ideas for LDRD proposals
  • Completed Phase I of the national Quantum Information Science Roadmap (Quantum Computing)
  • Coordinated the largest quantum information community in the world

Exceptional ROI on initial FY96 LDRD investment of $400K
Potential FY04 funding of $15 - 20M
