Quantum Networking with Atoms and Photons

Abstract

Efforts to realize long-distance quantum networks have recently attracted considerable attention. In 2001, Duan, Lukin, Cirac, and Zoller have proposed to use atomic ensembles as building blocks for quantum repeaters. We have recently proposed a practical quantum telecommunication scheme based on atomic cascade transitions in alkali metals, and have demonstrated its critical elements: entanglement of 1530 nm and 780 nm photonic qubits, collective atomic qubits, entanglement of atomic qubits and photonic qubits, quantum state transfer between atomic and photonic qubits, and entanglement of remote atomic qubits. These advances should enable realization of long-distance quantum communication over optical fiber networks.
