Precision Measurements

We search for time variation in the fine structure constant by comparing the frequency of electronic transitions in ions that are predicted to have very different dependencies. Toward this end, the Alpha-Dot Project has produced and trapped isotopically-pure clouds of singly- and doubly-charged Yb ions. The Gas Shock Tube Experiment quantifies turbulence through shocked fluid instabilities (Richtmyer-Meshkov) with simultaneous measurement of density and velocity fields in 2D, validating the RAGE code.
