The ultimate goal of this work
is to search for time variation in the fine structure constant, α, by comparing the
frequency of electronic transitions in these ions that are predicted to have very different α
dependences. The ions are confined in an RF Paul trap for hours or even days at a time
and are well isolated from their environment. This is the first trapping of multiplycharged
ions in such a trap.
