The Millennium Simulation: our Universe in a supercomputer

Simon White, Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics

This seminar will describe the Millennium Simulation, the largest simulation of cosmic structure ever carried out. It will focus on how such simulations can be used to make precise predictions for (and thus to test) the now standard paradigm for the growth of all structure in our Universe. In particular, it will discuss the exploration and calibration of astronomical tests for the nature of Dark Matter and Dark Energy, stressing why realistic models of galaxy formation/evolution are needed to estimate cosmological parameters robustly and precisely from late-time observations.

The P/T Colloquium is
typically held each
Thursday, 3:45–5:00 PM.
Refreshments are served
at 3:15 PM.
