Physical Aspects of Growth Control in Development

Boris Shraiman, UCSB

Regulation of cell growth and proliferation plays a fundamental role in the development of multi-cellular organisms and in progression of cancer. In the context of development, the outstanding question is to understand the mechanisms that coordinate growth with patterning of tissues. What mechanisms assure that a limb is built with the right proportions? What determines its adult size?
This talk will introduce the problem in the context of fly wing development and will suggest mechanical feedback on cell growth and proliferation could provide a part of the answer.
