Deep Underground Science

Wick Haxton, University of Washington

I will discuss some of the science that is motivating efforts to create a deep underground science and engineering laboratory (DUSEL). Examples include new double beta decay experiments to measure the neutrino mass, long-baseline neutrino oscillation tests involving new beams and detectors of an unprecedented size, and efforts to determine the limiting conditions for the survival of deep subsurface microbes. The physics and earth science communities have worked for four years to build the case for DUSEL. I will discuss some of the site possibilities including one in the Mt Stuart batholith that has been the focus of the University of Washington's recent efforts.
