From Quarks to Livermore to the Cosmos: How a National Security Laboratory is Engaging Big Physics Questions (and Why)

William H. Goldstein, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

At the beginning of the 21st century, a set of profound, basic questions continue to confound our understanding of the physical world at its most fundamental level. At LLNL, we are engaged in projects both locally, and in international collaborations, to address many of these fundamental questions. I'll discuss a number of these efforts, and how they benefit the lab.
