Stanford Nuclear Smuggling Database: Dynamics and Trends Over the Past Decade

Lyudmila Zaitseva

The talk will discuss the Stanford Database on Nuclear Smuggling, Theft and Orphan Radiation Sources (DSTO) and provide a brief analysis of the data it has collected. DSTO contains around 900 records, including 700 illicit trafficking incidents that occurred worldwide. The talk will address the dynamics and trends of nuclear smuggling in various regions of the world over the past ten years. A special emphasis will be given to the situation in the Caucasus, Turkey and Central Asia, which observed an increase in illicit trafficking cases in 1999-2001. Nuclear smuggling chains, consisting of suppliers, traffickers and potential end-users, will also be discussed.
