Overview

The Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (N) at Los Alamos National Laboratory works both on the front lines and behind the scenes to prevent the use of nuclear or radiological materials as threats to national or international security. N Division and its predecessors originated nuclear safeguards and created most of the technology used to monitor and measure nuclear materials to assure their use in legitimate, peaceful purposes.

At N Division we:

• have trained nearly every inspector working for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over the past 30 years;
• continue to advance new technical solutions to address ever-changing threat scenarios;
• support the international export control and nonproliferation regimes and provide technical input to the nation's policy leaders at the highest levels;
• analyze the potential technical and logistical capabilities of our nation's adversaries; and
• staff and equip emergency teams trained to react to nuclear crises.

The approximately 250 members of N Division stand committed to maintaining a rich scientific history and tradition in support of nuclear nonproliferation and the national security of the United States.
