About Us
The Safeguards Science and Technology Group develops and implements
nuclear material measurement systems in support of national and international
safeguards and nonproliferation policy objectives.
The work performed in the group has a major impact on preventing the
proliferation of nuclear weapons by providing accurate measurement technologies
for nuclear materials at domestic and international sites. Applications
include nuclear materials control and accountability for domestic DOE
and international nuclear facilities, nuclear waste disposal, nuclear
material stabilization efforts, and international nonproliferation efforts.
The group's research areas include: neutron and gamma-ray measurements
(detector simulation, design, development, and evaluation), nuclear
measurement techniques, neutron and gamma-ray tomography, portable spectroscopic
analysis, imaging with neutrons and gamma-rays, accurate low-level heat
measurement techniques, X-ray fluorescence and transmission, electronics
and software development for remote monitoring, detection of clandestinely
transported radioactive materials, and related activities.
