Magnetic Imaging at the SPML

Magnetic ImagingPerhaps one of the most exciting SPM-based technique in use today is magnetic imaging. Magnetic Force Microscopy is the most well known magnetic imaging technique and employs standard AFM cantilevers coated with a magnetic film. Using MFM or other scanned magnetic sensors, it is possible to address samples with magnetic structure on size scales from nanometers to micrometers and beyond. In our work we have studied a variety of different types of materials with magnetic domain structures including thin films, amorphous metals, superconductors and hard disk drive platters.
