Facilities and Capabilities
The STC has developed extensive facilities with a variety of collaborator-accessible laboratories and state-of-the-art equipment. We invite you to visit our facilities to become more familiar with the equipment and expertise available to industrial partners at Los Alamos.
Ion Beam Assisted Deposition (IBAD) Laboratory
Vacuum chambers containing two sputtering guns for IBAD deposition of films on moving tapes with RHEED surface analytical probe.
HTS Applications: Deposition of IBAD aligned films on alloy or pure nickel tapes.
Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) Laboratory
Pulsed excimer lasers and vacuum chambers
HTS Applications: Deposition of HTS and buffer layer films on different substrates including moving IBAD, RABiTs, or other aligned tape assemblies.
Superconductor Characterization Lab
Critical current apparatus, SQUID magnetometer
HTS Applications: Determine critical currents, critical temperatures, and magnetic flux motion in HTS materials from 2 K to room temperature and in magnetic fields to 9 tesla.
AC Loss Research Laboratory
Measurement and reduction of ac losses in single conductors and as part of more complex components of coils (magnets, generators, motors) and of cables. Magnetic, transport, and calorimetric methods are available.
X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) Characterization Lab
Single crystal, powder diffraction, phi scans, or pole figure analysis
HTS Applications: X-ray diffraction analyses of crystal structure, phase composition, or crystalline alignment of HTS systems including OPIT and Coated Conductor tapes.
Electron Microscope Facility (EMF)
Scanning (SEM), transmission (TEM), and scanning transmission (STEM) electron microscopes
HTS Applications: Determine phase content and interfacial reactions in HTS systems including tapes.

Scanning Probe Microscopy Lab (SPML)
Scanning Tunneling and Atomic Force Microscopes
HTS Applications: Determine surface character of deposited films.

Ion Beam Materials Lab (IBML)
Ion implanter (200 kV) and tandem accelerator (3MV).
HTS Applications: Surface modification; Rutherford backscattering for compositional analysis; interfacial diffusion studies; determination of crystallinity by ion beam channeling.

National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL)
High field magnets generating magnetic fields to 20 tesla (steady state) and 60 tesla (pulsed field).
HTS Applications: Evaluate magnetic field behavior of HTS materials including tapes over 4-75K.

Neutron Scattering Center (LANSCE)
Spallation neutron sources for research and applications, materials irradiation, crystal structure determination.
HTS Applications: Introduce controlled defects into HTS materials and assemblies by neutron and proton bombardment; determine HTS crystal structures.

Los Alamos Research Park
The STC provides deposition and characterization facilities at the Los Alamos Research Park for testing of continuous coating of tapes. Our 10,000 square foot facility includes 4 fabrication labs, 3 high technology superconducting application labs, and 14 offices. HTS tapes can be fully characterized and prototype applications tested within the facility.
