Los Alamos National Laboratory is developing technologies needed for high-temperature superconducting coated conductors (CC). For this purpose we have developed continuous reel-to-reel processing of 1-cm wide tape for each step in fabrication and characterization.
Metal alloy tape (Hastelloy C-276) is used as a starting substrate. The substrate is electropolished to a surface smoothness < 1 nm RMS over a 5x5 μm area. IBAD textured MgO is grown on top of the polished substrate and used as a template for growth of epitaxial RBa2Cu3O7 (R= Y or rare earth). Electropolishing IBAD Template.
