Black History Month — Embracing Cultural Diversity

Poster/Essay Contest

The African-American Diversity Working Group (AADWG), in partnership with the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity (OEOD), is co-sponsoring a poster/essay contest (pdf) for grades 1-3 (poster) and grades 4-6 (essay). The deadline for submissions is January 18, 2008. Winners will be announced on February 4, 2008.

All posters will be displayed at the Mesa Public Library from January 31, 2008 through February 29, 2008, and the winning essay will be published. Cash and prizes will be awarded to all winners and participants!

Poster criteria:

must be no larger than 12" x 18" and no smaller than 8.5" x 11";
may be in crayon, paint, markers, and/or colored pencil.

Essay criteria:

must reference the theme, Embracing Cultural Diversity;
must be historically accurate;
must have a sense of originality and creativity;
must display good language skills (e.g., spelling, syntax, and grammar);
must be neat and legible.

Submit all entries to your school's main office.

Note: Please include the teacher's name on the poster and essay, as well as the student's name, grade, and school.
