New technology in High Performance Computing and Simulation
HPC-5 provides advanced research, development, testing, and deployment of new technology in the High Performance Computing and Simulation arena. As systems and technology are deployed into a production environment, HPC-5 provides back-up support to the production system consultants, system administrators, and file systems team in HPC-3. Staff provide application analysis and consulting as needed to assist application teams to more effectively use these systems, especially for I/O and file systems.
Visitors from the Pueblo of Picuris Tour Computing Facilities
Visitors from the Pueblo of Picuris came to the Laboratory on April 30 for a tour of the computing facilities, which included the HPC-5 CAVE. On the way out of the CAVE, a young man on the tour remarked that
what he saw there made him want to go back to school. The CAVE that inspired this remark is an immersive
environment in the Metropolis Center for Modeling and Simulation where three-dimensional simulations surround viewers and can be studied from
all sides. The visitor was a part of a group from the Pueblo of Picuris that included the Picuris Tribal Council.
The Pueblo of Picuris is one of the smallest of the Eight Northern New Mexico pueblos,
located about 25 miles south of Taos. Lorrie Lopez, of Environmental Communication and Public Involvement, helped to arrange the tour.
Lorrie later wrote to tour leaders Laura Monroe, Kim Edlund and Paul Weber, all of HPC-5: Thank you all so much for the tour for Picuris Pueblo. The tribal
council was quite impressed by the obvious quality and extensiveness of your work. You clearly represented and demonstrated the value of
LANL and our computer science work for all Americans.
