Program / Schedule

Presentations are 25 minutes maximum with 5 minutes for questions.
Hour slots are 55 minutes with 5 minutes for questions.

Cool weather is anticipated.
Along with your swimsuit, consider multiple clothing layers as well as a rain coat and/or umbrella.

Bring a Swiss (not EU) electrical plug adapter.

The ICNEM XVIII will be held in Ascona, Canton Ticino, Switzerland on the edge of Lago Maggiore from June 9-14, 2013. Canton Ticino is the only Italian-speaking Swiss canton and faces the magnificent Lake Maggiore.

The conference is set at the Centro Stefano Franscini, situated on the hill above the charming village of Ascona. The main building of the Centro was designed in 1924 by Emil Fahrenkamp, a member of the Bauhaus. The Hotel Monte Verita building is Switzerland Historical Hotel of the year for 2013 due to its well-preserved Bauhaus design, the avant-garde in architecture in the inter-war period. The bedrooms have recently been renovated extensively to recover their full original design, colors and Bauhaus furniture.

Registration and Fees

As there is no on-site registration this year, all attendees and guests must register on-line with credit card prior to the conference. Early registration is open until March 1st when the fees go up.

Early registration fees are 1050 CHF for single and 850 CHF for double. Fees for regular registration are 1300 CHF single and 1100 CHF double. Registration fees include full board.

Accompanying people not attending the conference must also register - 750 CHF for early registration or 1000 CHF for regular registration.

Accommodation, Meals, and Transportation

Registration includes on-site accommodations for 5 nights, all meals, coffee and tea breaks, welcome reception, conference excursion and diner, and the Young Scientist award ceremony. On Sunday and Friday, a shuttle service between the Locarno train and the hotel is also included. Overnight stays and meals prior to or following ICNEM '13 are not included.

Lodging at the Centro Stefano Franscini conference center is Sunday - Thursday nights only. You will have to find other lodging arrangements on Friday night.

To arrive at the conference center at Monte Verita / Ascona from outside Switzerland, either read the summary below or read the Centro Stefano Franscini link.

International airports with best access are Zurich and Milan. From either city, take the train to Locarno, CH (Switzerland) - the closest train station. A free shuttle runs from the Locarno train station to the conference center on Sunday and Friday as noted above. Local public transport also is available between Locarno and Monte Verita.

The train from Zurich airport to Zurich HBB (central train station) takes 15 minutes. The train from Zurich HBB to Locarno takes about 3 hours with changes.

From Milan, trains to Locarno leave from Centrale and Garibaldi train stations and take 2-3 hours with changes. The train from Milan Malpensa airport to either train station takes about 35 minutes. From Milan Linate airport, there is a regular airport bus to Centrale station that takes approximately 20 minutes.

Trains run from both cities to Locarno from 5-6 AM until fairly late in the evening including Sunday. In Zurich, the trains run approximately every hour. In Milan, trains run every 1-2 hours depending on the station. (Check schedules for the specific train station to avoid delays.) Purchase tickets at the train stations on day of arrival for 32 CHF from Zurich. As an estimate, the US Eurail site quotes Milan-Locarno price as $82US, as Trenitalia schedules and prices aren't available on-line currently for this itinerary.
