To prepare for our work, in the chilly March of 1997, EES-11's Craig Pearson participated in a preliminary investigation of the site.
There were two test sites in this area. One was in the Degelen Mountains. This is the other - the plains of Balapan. All around are several hundred boreholes up to 1200 meters deep down which nuclear bombs would be placed and tested...until 1989 when testing stopped.
It is destruction of these boreholes and preventing any possibility of their use in the future that brings EES-11 to Kazakhstan.
