Source Depth of Burial Experiment at Balapan

Shown below are seismic record sections of the vertical (Z), radial (R), and transverse (T) components from each of the 25 ton explosions in the Depth Burial Experiment. Time and range increases upward and to the right, respectively, in each plot. Amplitudes in each trace are normalized to the maximum within the trace and therefore do not reflect the relative amplitude as a function of increasing range. It is obvious that the 50 meter deep explosion generated much higher amplitude surface waves than did either of the deeper explosions, as expected by theory. Impulsive P wave arrivals dominate the traces from the 300 and 550 meter deep explosions.
