The Effect of Secondary Arrivals on Regional Earthquake Locations

Relocations Using S Phases for the Asia Study Area

We relocated events within the region defined in Chapter 2 for a merged data set which includes phases from the EDR and REB catalogs along with LANL regional picks. Only events with S phases were relocated and only those which have both input and output locations are shown. The "regional" weighting from Figure 5 was applied. Both the IASP91 (left) and SSB (right) models were used with the addition of PPCs for P phases. Yellow circles indicate starting locations. Both models produce locations with less overall scatter, especially along the western and southern edges of the Tibetan Plateau.
