Regional Seismic Event Location in Asia

Seismicity of Asia

The three maps below show seismicity within and near China for three catalogs (the NEIC, ISC, and PIDC) along with the reporting station locations. The histograms show frequency-magnitude relations for the first two seismicity plots. Note that both catalogs are incomplete below about M 4.5. Although not shown in this poster, the IDC catalog is similarly incomplete at smaller magnitudes. Because the PIDC stations have not been recording data long enough to build a large database of P-arrivals, we have chosen to simulate regional seismic event locations using data from the NEIC and ISC databases. To date, available ground truth is very limited for China, consisting of only the nuclear shots at Lop Nor and a handful of earthquakes.
