Radiation Transport Capabilities
The D-5 Radiation Transport Team focuses its expertise on both code development and applications. The MCNPX code project (http://mcnpx.lanl.gov) provides an all-particle, all-energy Monte Carlo transport tool for use in nearly all nuclear applications, including reactor and accelerator design, radiotherapy facility design and treatment planning, active and passive detection of nuclear materials, and cosmic-ray interactions with spacecraft and planetary objects. The activation and transmutation capabilities of Cinder recently have been integrated into MCNPX to broaden its application base further. Workshops are held around the world to provide MCNPX training to hundreds of users each year.
Team members also provide Monte Carlo and deterministic application expertise to a variety of Department of Energy, Department of Defense, and Department of Homeland Defense programs. Once again, the range of applications is quite broad, including reactor design, material effects, nonproliferation, and spacecraft detector design.
