Environmental problems of national importance are considered under the topic "environmental analysis" in TSA-4. In particular, nuclear waste legacy problems fill the greater portion of the projects that have been historically funded, although certain other problems of national importance (e.g., increase of pollutants in the Salton Sea) can be of interest if they fit our background and capabilities.

These problems are analyzed using a variety of methodologies: economic analyses, technology evaluations, modeling and simulation, and complex-wide workshops to look at modeling and simulation techniques for environmental waste cleanup. Probably the longest-running project TSA-4 has held under this category is ETCAP (Environmental Technology Cost-Savings Analysis Project), which has over 100 publications and continuous funding since 1990.
