DOE Chem-Bio Transport
In a multi- National Laboratory effort, dispersion modeling tools
are being developed to counter the threat of terrorist chemical
and biological (CB) agent attacks in cities. The Chemical and Biological
National Security Program (CBNP) has the goal of developing an integrated
atmospheric dispersion modeling capability for chemical and biological
releases within the complex urban environment. Teams from Argonne,
Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos, Pacific Northwest
and Sandia National Laboratories are working together on understanding
issues on source term characterization, indoor dispersion in subways
and buildings, and exterior transport and dispersion in the urban
atmosphere. Los Alamos and Livermore are tasked with exterior modeling
across regional, urban, and building scales. We are developing both
fast response and high fidelity codes across the regime of scales.
Model evaluation is a key component of the program. Wind-tunnel
experiments, reduced-scale field experiments, and full-scale urban
field trials have been carried out with collaborators. These data
sets are proving valuable for model testing and improvement. This
work is supported and managed by the National
Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) within the Department of Energy
(DOE).
