Coming Up With Platinum Substitutes May Be Elemental
Platinum and some related precious metals (palladium, iridium, rhodium and ruthenium) are frequently used as chemical catalysts and for countless laboratory processes. As rare metals, they are also expensive. To ensure technological advances are not curtailed due to their lack of availability or high cost, Lab researchers are working with an abundant element to take their place: cobalt. Read more

Help Local Children Get New Shoes
Local children in need of new shoes are getting help this winter from the LANL Laces program, currently working with school districts in Rio Arriba, Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Los Alamos and Taos counties, as well as some area tribal schools, to provide more than 330 elementary children with new sneakers or loafers within the next month. Protecting the Environment Into the Future
Last year, the Lab recycled 47 percent of its solid, non-hazardous waste (which translates to about 1,275 metric tons of paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, and aluminum cans) by placing it in the recycling containers that dot the Laboratory landscape. Read more

The American Physical Society has recognized 10 Laboratory scientists for “exceptional contributions to the physics enterprise; e.g., outstanding physics research, important applications of physics, leadership in or service to physics, or significant contributions to physics education” by making them Fellows.
