COMMUNITY GIVING

Employee Giving Campaign in Progress

The Lab is just about to complete this year’s annual Employee Giving Campaign. So far, $1.5 million has been raised through employee contributions. Los Alamos National Security, LLC, the Lab’s manager, will match the contributions up to $1 million, meaning than more than $2.5 million will be made available to nonprofit organizations in Northern New Mexico and beyond. Lab Supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The National Cancer Institute estimates that, at current rates, 12.2 percent of women born today will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some time in their lives. To help encourage education and action about this, the Lab joined national Breast Cancer Awareness Month through a Think Pink for the Cure campaign. Read more

Feed the Five Hundred X2 Food Donation Drive

The Lab began its annual Holiday Food Drive last month and hopes to help feed approximately 1,000 people this year. Last year’s Drive collected enough cans, boxes, jars, and bags of food to feed more than 800 people. Read more

HD3 Discovery Day December 8

The High Desert Discovery District (HD3) and Northern New Mexico Connect, a collection of economic development programs funded by Los Alamos National Security, LLC (LANS), will host the next HD3 Discovery Day on December 8. Read more

Construction Procurement Opportunities Available Online

The Regional Development Corporation and other Northern New Mexico organizations are helping local companies and workers prepare for opportunities related to upcoming Laboratory construction projects. Read more

LANS Venture Acceleration Funds Awarded

LANS has selected two companies to receive capital from its Venture Acceleration Fund to help their businesses grow and thus promote regional economic development. Read more

LANL Spinoff Receives $300,000 NIH Grant

Mesa Tech International, Inc. of Santa Fe has received a Phase 1 Small Business Innovation Research grant from the National Institutes of Health. Read more

Taos’ Vapour Beauty Struts its Stuff During NYC Fashion Week

During the recent New York City Fashion Week, models for Hassan Pierre’s clothing line wore Vapour Beauty’s organic cosmetics. All formulation and manufacturing for the line are done in Taos. Read more

LANL Foundation Education Conference Draws Crowd

More than 1,500 teachers, principals, administrators, and education professionals filed into the meeting rooms at the Buffalo Thunder Resort to attend Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation’s Conference on Education. Read more

Resources for LANL 2012 Internships

Students who want to take advantage of Lab summer internships next year should be aware that the Department of Energy offers two funding sources for science students. Read more

New Education Video Available Online

In concert with this year’s Education Conference (see the story above), the Lab introduced a 17-minute video that highlights ways in which the Lab has partnered with regional educational institutions to advance Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education. Read more

New Video Showing at the Bradbury Science Museum

The Bradbury Science Museum is debuting a new, high-definition 15-minute video that highlights the Lab’s weapons programs, supercomputing, and work at major facilities such as the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Read more

As in past years, the Bradbury Science Museum’s annual High Tech Halloween drew a large crowd. Read more

ENVIRONMENT

LANL Sets TRU Waste Hauling Record

Los Alamos National Laboratory set a new Lab record for the amount of transuranic (TRU) waste shipped in a single year from historic nuclear operations to the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad, NM. Read more

Water Monitoring on Lab Property Continues Post Fire

Following the Las Conchas fire, LANL has taken several actions related to water monitoring and analysis. As part of that effort, eleven gauges were slated for quick turn-around analysis to measure contaminants flowing onto and off of LANL property following this summer’s Las Conchas fire. Read more
