2013 Community Commitment Plan Approved

Last month, the Board of Governors of Los Alamos National Security, LLC (the company that manages LANL for the U.S. Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration) unanimously approved recommendations to continue its $3 million a year contribution to support its Community Commitment Plan (CCP). COMMUNITY GIVING

“Season of Giving” Launches

This year, the Laboratory introduces its “Season of Giving,” which will run through the end of the year. October will see the start of the Lab’s annual employee-giving campaign, November will feature a food drive, and December will highlight a holiday gift collection. Read more

Assets in Action “A Night in Italy” Fundraiser on October 20

Building “Healthy Communities, Healthy Youth” is the goal of Los Alamos’ Assets in Action program. You can further its efforts by attending the fundraiser “A Night in Italy” scheduled for Saturday, October 20. Read more

Donate Used Career Clothes to Help Others through October 15

Accelerate (a nonprofit organization that provides technical training and job placement) is currently accepting donations of gently used business clothing to help men and women transition into the workforce. Read more

Startup Funding Forum on October 18 in Santa Fe

Coronado Ventures Forum will present “Early-Stage Fundraising Options for Founders in New Mexico” on October 18 at 6 p.m. in Santa Fe at the Eldorado Hotel. Read more

Learn About Lab Research at this Year’s LDRD Day on October 23

The public will have an opportunity to learn about some of the Lab’s cutting-edge research and chat with its experts at this year’s LDRD (short for Laboratory Directed Research and Development) Day. It’s scheduled for Tuesday, October 23, from 9:20 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. at the Buffalo Thunder Resort in Santa Fe. Read more

Lab Makes Understanding the Complexity of Wind Power “A Breeze”

Loren Toole, a principal investigator with the Lab, has been working with a group of ranchers and other landowners in eastern New Mexico to help them evaluate their renewable energy resources and prepare them for successful negotiations with wind-energy developers. Read more

Effective Teaching Conference on October 11-12

Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation’s 15th annual conference on education will feature Harry K. Wong and Rosemary Wong as keynote speakers on “Effective Teaching." Read more

Pink Skies Coming to Northern New Mexico October 15-16

This award-winning documentary follows a breast-cancer survivor participating in a record, multi-national, all-woman “Jump for the Cause” skydiving event. It also covers the topic of cancer prevention. Read more

High-Tech Halloween at the Lab's Museum is “Spooktacular”

As part of downtown Los Alamos’ “Trick or Treat on Main Street,” the Lab’s Bradbury Science Museum will hold its annual High-Tech Halloween science celebration on Friday, October 26, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Read more

Early Childhood Experiences Conference On October 30

Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation’s First Born Program presents “Understanding Early Childhood Experiences as a Primary Public Health Concern.” It is scheduled for Tuesday, October 30, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort at Santa Ana Pueblo. Read more

The Smartest House in Los Alamos

The first project in the United States to demonstrate how "smart grid" technology could provide residential customers with a significant amount of their electricity from renewable resources is open and getting ready for visitors. Read more

Multiple Organizations Build Interagency Fire Center at LANL

A multi-federal-agency effort is now underway to build a new Interagency Fire Center in the heart of Northern New Mexico. Read more
