Magnetism is a fundamental force that we use to generate electricity, guide planes and ships across the globe, and encode information on our computers. By measuring how some materials behave when exposed to high magnetic pulses, scientists can better understand how these substances react at a quantum mechanic (atomic and subatomic) level. Read more

LANL Kicks Off Employee Giving Drive
The Lab kicked off its employee-giving efforts on September 14, in conjunction with the region’s annual United Way campaign. Last year’s successful Lab campaign had a goal of $1.5 million, and employees contributed $1.6 million. Read more
LANL Laces Fits Kids to a Tee
Local children in need of new shoes were recently treated to a field trip and fitted for a brand new pair of them—with or without laces. The Lab’s LANL Laces program worked with schools in Chama, Pojoaque, El Rito, Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, Espanola, Mora, and Las Vegas to fit nearly 350 elementary children with new sneakers or loafers. Lab Holds Another Successful LDRD Day
More than 250 people attended the Lab’s third annual LDRD Day. This year, it highlighted 40 of the Lab’s innovative Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) projects with easily-understood posters that addressed why the research is important to our country and the way in which the Lab is making progress in solving large scientific challenges. Lab Scientists Help Farmers With Crucial Irrigation Issues
The Santa Cruz Reservoir provides irrigation water to more than 1,600 farms in the region. To help local farmers, scientists from LANL and Sandia National Laboratories came together to shed light on how to best mitigate these sediment problems. Read more
LANL Major Subcontractors Consortium Assists Pueblo
Recently, Lab Director McMillan put out a call for earthmoving equipment to help Santa Clara Pueblo recover from fire and flood damage related to the Las Conchas fire. As a result, teams from two of the Lab’s contractors, Energy Solutions and Franks Supply Company, offered equipment and operators to help with Santa Clara’s efforts. Read more
