270,000 Volunteer Hours Logged for 2011
During 2011, LANL employees and retirees volunteered in their communities for 270,000 hours, the equivilent to working 24 hours a day for 31 years. That brings to 997,000 the total number of hours since the Laboratory began using the VolunteerMatch software in 2006! Read more

"Books Are Fun" will hold a fair on April 9 and 10 in the Lab’s Otowi Building (Technical Area 3, Building 261) that will benefit the LANL Laces program, which helps provide regionally deserving children with new shoes. Read more
Homeless Women Veterans Need Your Help
The Middle Rio Grande YWCA operates Henderson House in Albuquerque, which provides a transitional center for homeless women veterans and their children. The facility’s needs are great and include monetary donations, gas cards to help defray transportation costs, children’s clothes, storage space for residents' personal items, and regional activity tickets to help with stress management. May is Mental Health Month
As many as one in four people in the United States could benefit from mental health services but don’t get them because they don’t understand how those resources could really improve their lives or are afraid of the stigma attached to “needing help.” Read more

The TRU Waste Program at Los Alamos National Laboratory is nearly two months ahead of schedule processing and repackaging waste stored in large fiberglass-reinforced boxes, or FRP's. Read more
Three Small Businesses Selected for Laboratory Environmental Work
The Lab has awarded up to $250 million in contracts to three small businesses with offices in Northern New Mexico to assist with waste disposal. The companies include ARS Cavanagh Environmental Services, LLC; Portage, Inc.; and Navarro Research & Engineering, Inc. Read more
Making a Grab for Garbage
Acccording to the Keep America Beautiful organization, litter begets litter. People tend to leave more trash in areas that already have some so, to help keep the Lab's property looking sharp, employees are encouraged to pick up and dispose of litter during its annual Great Garbage Grab from April 2-13. Lab Creates World Record Magnetic Pulse
In October, Connections highlighted a story on the Lab’s research using powerful magnetic pulses. We also included information on how the team was trying to break their existing record with a magnetic pulse of 100 tesla (or two million times the Earth’s magnetic field) and promised to keep you up to date.
