About the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement Project, CMRR

In 1999, DOE and the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB) approved a plan calling for the decommissioning of the current Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) building by 2010. A new facility, Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement (CMRR), must be built because the existing facility cannot be upgraded.

All nuclear programs at Los Alamos National Laboratory are supported by the existing CMR capabilities. The only way to maintain these nuclear program missions beyond 2010 is through CMRR.

In November 2003, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) published the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the CMRR Project at LANL (DOE/EIS-0350). Click to view the CMRR EIS.

The CMRR EIS looked at the construction impacts of the project and proposed the following:

  • The site for the new facility is at TA-55
  • There will be a single nuclear laboratory facility with a separate administrative building
  • The existing CMR building is to be decommissioned, decontaminated, and demolished in its entirety
