Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement Project, CMRR

The main goal of the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement (CMRR) Project is to relocate several mission critical projects—analytical chemistry, materials characterization, and actinide research and development capabilities—to a newer facility. The CMRR Project will cost between $745–975M, with construction expected to be completed between 2013 and 2017.

This project will allow Los Alamos to continue to maintain and certify the U.S. nuclear stockpile through work in the following areas:

  • pit manufacturing, surveillance, and disassembly
  • enhanced surveillance
  • milliwatt radioisotope thermoelectric generator surveillance
  • retired stockpile component processing
  • above – subcritical experiments
  • special nuclear material readiness and materials storage
  • advanced design/production technologies
  • dynamic materials properties
  • material certification in a hostile environment
  • arms control and nonproliferation
  • advanced nuclear fuels
