Janoschek receives Wolfram-Prandl Prize

Los Alamos researcher Marc Janoschek was honored recently for “his pioneering studies of the spin dynamics in chiral helimagnets and the development of a cryogen-free apparatus for spherical neutron polarimetry.”

Cutting-edge condensed matter physics research, high magnetic field science for materials challenges

Condensed Matter and Magnet Science (MPA-CMMS) comprises research scientists, technicians, postdoctoral researchers, and students specializing in experimental physics research, with a strong emphasis on fundamental condensed matter physics and complementary thrusts in the following areas:

  • Actinide materials
  • Correlated electron materials
  • Energy research
  • Fermi surface topology
  • High magnetic field diagnostic development
  • High magnetic field generation
  • Magneto optics
  • Multi-ferroic materials
  • Non-linear dynamics
  • Spectroscopies: nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), photoemission, magneto optics, neutron scattering, resonant ultrasound
  • Vortex physics

MPA-CMMS is home to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory–Pulsed Field Facility (NHMFL-PFF), a National Science Foundation-funded pulsed magnetic field user facility. Here, the world’s highest nondestructive pulsed magnetic fields are generated, attracting users from around the globe who come to conduct experiments at the facility each year.

Key capabilities
  • Experimental physics at extremes of high magnetic field and low temperatures
  • Magnet design, pulsed magnetic field diagnostics, and materials characterization
  • Materials synthesis (including actinides and intermetallic compounds)
  • Pulsed electrical power and diagnostics (HV and HC)
  • Suite of nondestructive pulsed magnets up to 100 tesla
  • Thermoacoustics and fluid dynamics
  • Transport, magnetism, and thermodynamic characterization at extreme conditions of temperature, pressure, magnetic field
  • Very low temperature physics
Key diagnostics
  • Electronic transport, thermodynamic and magnetic materials characterization
