Additive Manufacturing, known also as 3D printing, allows for the rapid production of parts with complex shapes that would be impossible to fabricate using traditional machining techniques. Scientists in Los Alamos National Laboratory's Chemistry and Explosive Science and Shock Physics divisions are exploring new methods for 3D printing that allow for the function of materials to be controlled by their internal structure. When applied to the production of high explosive materials, these novel methods will give scientists increased control over the materials' structure and behavior, resulting in increases in both safety and performance.
