The American Statistical Association (ASA) is the world’s largest community of statisticians. It was founded in Massachusetts in 1839.

Leslie “Lisa” Moore of the Laboratory's Statistical Sciences group is the recipient of the 2013 Don Owen Award presented by the American Statistical Association, San Antonio Chapter. She received the award at the Conference of Texas Statisticians.

The American Statistical Association bestows the Don Owen Award to a statistician who embodies the accomplishments of Donald B. Owen. Before his death in 1991, Professor Owen was the Distinguished Professor of Statistics at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. His illustrious career serves as the standard for excellence in research, dissemination of statistical knowledge and service to the statistical community.

Research achievements

Moore earned a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin and then joined LANL as a technical staff member in the Statistics Group in 1985. She has also worked as an assistant research professor at Duke University, for Comforce Technical Services, and has been an adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico – Los Alamos.

Collaborations with scientists and engineers at LANL have motivated Moore’s research in computer and physical design, analysis of experiments and applied statistics. She has addressed a wide variety of problems of scientific and national importance, including critical infrastructure protection, transportation simulation, carbon capture implementation, nuclear plant reliability, science-based stockpile stewardship, supercomputer performance and environmental impact.

Moore is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society. Her awards include Certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Laboratory Distinguished Performance Team Award, and a Laboratory Achievement Award for contributions to the CCS-6 Student Program. Moore chairs the Workshop on Design and Analysis of Experiments (Santa Fe, NM) and serves as a referee for Technometrics and other statistical journals.
