Hobart named American Chemical Society Fellow

The ACS Fellows program began in 2008 to recognize and honor members for outstanding achievements in and contributions to science, the profession, and ACS.

The American Chemical Society honored Hobart for research in actinides and lanthanides.

David Hobart, long-time Chemistry Division employee and current affiliate in the National Security Education Center (NSEC), has been elected to Fellow of the American Chemical Society (ACS). The ACS honored him for his significant contributions to f-element science. The f-elements are those that have electrons in their f orbitals (lanthanides and the actinides). The ACS noted that Hobart contributed the reduction potential for the americium (IV)/(III) redox couple to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Nuclear Energy Database under “Chemical Thermodynamics of Americium.” He also serves as chair-elect of the Division of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology and has co-organized the Analytical Chemistry in Nuclear Technology Symposia series at ACS National Meetings for the past decade.

Achievements

Hobart received a doctorate in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Tennessee. He joined Los Alamos in 1983. His research focuses on the chemistry and applications of the lanthanides and actinides. As a result of his expertise in the f-elements, the Russian Academy of Sciences invited him to visit Tobolsk, Siberia and lecture at a special Periodic Table-focused celebration of Dimitri Mendeleev’s 175th birthday. He had a change-of-station assignment from Los Alamos to DOE Headquarters to assist EM-36 and Senator John Glenn’s office concerning the Hanford Nuclear Waste Tanks issues. Hobart served as a Member of the Expert Panel on Radionuclide Solubility in WIPP Brines, and he contributed to the publication of the WIPP Compliance and Certification Application Federal License to Operate document. Hobart has received two NNSA Defense Program Awards of Excellence, a CIA Recognition of Service with Distinction for Furthering the Mission of the Intelligence-Technology Innovation Center, a Laboratory Distinguished Performance Award for the Los Alamos 60th Anniversary Task Force, a Laboratory Distinguished Performance Award for the National Laboratory Blind Materials Analysis Proficiency Test and a Los Alamos Awards Program Award for the Legacy Waste Area Closure Team. After becoming a Laboratory affiliate in 2013, Hobart continues to contribute actively to the Lab and the LANL Periodic Table website in the f-elements.
