Lienert named American Welding Society Fellow

Thomas J. Lienert of the Lab's Metallurgy group was inducted into the American Welding Society's 2012 Class of Fellows during the recent FABTECH meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada. The FABTECH meeting, which honored the AWS 2012 Fellows, is North America’s largest metal forming, fabricating, welding and finishing event.
“Thomas J. Lienert has served the welding community and industry with great distinction as an individual who contributed significantly to the knowledge, science, and application of welding,” the society said in a statement.
Research achievements
Lienert holds a doctorate in materials science and engineering from Ohio State University. Since joining the group in 2002, he has played a key role in modernizing the laser system at Technical Area 55, replacing an antiquated system with a new Yb-fiber laser welding system. He also participated in the Canless Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) Fuel Plates Project and the Non-Destructive Laser Gas Sampling Project. Within the group, Lienert is acting team leader of Welding and Joining, the largest precision welding group of its kind in the DOE weapons complex.
Lienert is a director-at-large and member of the board of directors for AWS. He won the 2004 McKay-Helm Award for the most valuable paper published in the Welding Journal Research Supplement. Lienert also received the Charles. H. Jennings Memorial Award in 1999 for the most valuable contribution to welding literature published in the Welding Journal Research Supplement by a university student.
