Alan Bishop selected as Institute of Physics Fellow

LOS ALAMOS, New Mexico, January 18, 2011—Alan Bishop, Los Alamos National Laboratory’s associate director for theory, simulation, and computation, has been selected as a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. The IOP is a scientific charity devoted to increasing the practice, understanding, and application of physics. Fellows are distinguished as having a very high level of achievement in physics and demonstrating outstanding contributions to the profession.
Bishop is an internationally recognized leader in condensed matter theory, statistical physics, and nonlinear physics. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a recipient of the U.S. Department of Energy’s E.O. Lawrence Award, a Humboldt Senior Fellow, and a LANL Fellow.
Bishop was educated at the University of East Anglia and the University of Cambridge, where he earned a doctorate degree in theoretical solid-state physics at the Cavendish Laboratory. After working at Oxford, Cornell, and London Universities, he joined Los Alamos in 1979. He has served as the acting and deputy chairman of the Center for Nonlinear Studies, leader of LANL’s Condensed Matter Theory Group, and leader of the Theoretical Division. In June 2006, Bishop was selected to become the first associate director for the Theory, Simulation, and Computation Directorate.
