Nearly 200 nonprofit organizations to receive monetary donations from Los Alamos National Security, LLC

Employee volunteer efforts to be recognized

LOS ALAMOS, New Mexico, June 7, 2010—Nonprofit organizations are receiving more than $117,000 from Los Alamos National Security, LLC during a recognition event beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Fuller Lodge in downtown Los Alamos. The monetary donations are being made to the nonprofits as a result of the volunteer efforts of Los Alamos National Laboratory employees and retirees.

Deputy Laboratory Director Ike Richardson is scheduled to make brief remarks before the nonprofit organizations receive checks from LANS. Eligible nonprofit organizations are receiving the donations on behalf of Laboratory employees who support them by volunteering and who reported their hours through the Lab’s VolunteerMatch program.

“The genuine care and commitment Laboratory employees and retirees have for their communities is clearly demonstrated by the number of hours volunteered to these nonprofit organizations,” said Kurt Steinhaus of the Community Programs Office, which manages the Laboratory’s volunteer program.

Since the Laboratory joined VolunteerMatch in 2007, some 1,800 Los Alamos employees and retirees have reported 450,000 volunteer hours. Of that total, employee and retiree volunteers reported 193,400 volunteer hours in 2009.
