July 12, 2011—Employees can learn about volunteer opportunities related to the Las Conchas Fire by going to a new Facebook page. One immediate opportunity is filling sandbags at Santa Clara Pueblo, which began last weekend when approximately 100 employees, including students, showed up to help fill thousands of sandbags. The bags were placed around the pueblo's senior center, recreation center, homes, crops, and on banks of the arroyo that runs behind the senior center. More volunteers are needed this weekend.
Lab Director Charlie McMillan asked the Community Programs Office to establish the page to give employees a resource for volunteer opportunities tied to the fire. As the Lab learns of new volunteer opportunities related to the Las Conchas Fire, they will be announced on the Facebook page.
