Paul Burgardt named American Welding Society Fellow
October 27, 2011—Paul Burgardt of the Laboratory's Metallurgy group has been selected as a 2011 American Welding Society (AWS) Fellow. The AWS cited him for "sustained research and contributions in the area of welding physics, including surface tension driven fluid flow, arc spectroscopy and characterization of welding processes, including electron beam profiling and characterization. Further, for the promotion of the welding science and technology through his mentoring of students and through his lecture series on welding physics. Finally, for participation in welding related activities, such as the United States Department of Energy welding meetings and the AWS Professional Program."
Burgardt received a doctorate in solid state physics from Iowa State University, where he studied the magnetic and thermophysical properties of rare earth alloys. He joined LANL in 1980 and is a member of the Lab's Welding and Joining Team.
American Welding Society and its Fellows
The American Welding Society was founded in 1919. With more than 66,000 members worldwide, it is a nonprofit organization with the goal to advance the science, technology, and application of welding and related joining disciplines. The organization is known for its code and certification procedures, which provide industry standards for the welding and joining of metals, plastics, and other materials. The AWS established the honor of Fellow of the Society to recognize members for distinguished contributions to the field of welding science and technology, and for promoting and sustaining the professional stature of the field. Election as a Fellow is based on the reputation and outstanding accomplishment of the individual. A maximum of 10 fellows are selected each year.
