Read how Lab is making a positive difference in local communities
May 10, 2010—An Española soup kitchen is able to reach out to more families in need of nourishing meals, thanks to the efforts of the Laboratory and its partners. In the May issue of the Connections online newsletter, read about how the fourth annual Chile Bowl raised more than $20,000 for the San Martin de Porres soup kitchen.
This issue also highlights some of the Lab's business and economic development outreach efforts, and also includes information about programs that introduce children to science. Published monthly by the Community Programs Office, Connections is distributed to interested parties across the state.
Community Programs Office Director Kurt Steinhaus expands on the theme of the importance of science education, noting that the Bradbury Science Museum has a number of events designed for families this summer. "Do these early science education programs work? Based upon quantitative and qualitative research, we believe the answer is yes, students are excelling," said Steinhaus.
The May Connections also summarizes the highly successful small business forum in Española that drew representatives from more than 400 businesses, and a recent Innovation Celebration to recognize outstanding businesses assisted by the New Mexico Small Business Assistance (NMSBA) Program. The Lab is a partner in the NMSBA. The program helped 320 businesses last year.
Connections also links to a calendar of upcoming community events. Send feedback or story ideas for future issues of Connections to Linda Anderman or connections@lanl.gov, or call 5-4400.
